Dwight: Don’t you want to earn Shrute bucks?

Stanley: No. In fact, I’ll give you a billion Stanley nickels if you never talk to me again.

Dwight: What’s the ratio of Stanley nickels to Schrute bucks?

Stanley: Same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

Here's the stuff that's been getting a lot of "airtime" on my iPod lately:

Feist - A Reminder
Leslie Feist's voice is so amazing.
Here's Feist's video for "1, 2, 3, 4"

Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
Love this CD. Took a little while to get into it, but it really grew on me.
Here's the video for "I Still Remember"

Manic Street Preachers - Send Away the Tigers
I was the last person to interview the the Manics' James Dean Bradfield before the band's guitarist, Richey James, disappeared. I'll always have a soft spot for them, but this CD is their best in years.
Here's their video for "Your Love Alone is Not Enough"
If you think the female singer in this video looks familiar, it's because she's the lead singer of the Cardigans.

Justice - "†"
French electronic duo on Ed Banger Records. If you like Daft Punk, GET THIS when it's released next month.
Here's the video for their song "D.A.N.C.E."

Hadouken! (different songs and remixes)
This group really reminds of the late great Pop Will Eat Itself.
Here's the video for "That Boy, That Girl"

What's getting a lot of play on YOUR iPod?

Yes, it's me again. Back from an extended LiveJournal break. Sorry about that.

Lots of stuff happening in my personal life right now, but the biggest news is...I may soon be named as an elder at my church. This is a huge responsibility, and one that I take very seriously, so I've been spending a lot of time meeting with the current elders, praying (alone and with my wife), and studying.

In other news, I had 2 wisdom teeth removed and, as my luck would have it, there were complications that kept me down for a while.

Thanks to everyone who offered prayers for my father's health. He's slowly but surely getting better.

I just want to ask everyone who reads this to please pray for my father.

In December, he had a heart attack that almost ended his life. His heart stopped for 20 seconds and he had to be revived with the paddles.

During one of his follow-up visits, they found a blood clot in his heart. If that clot dislodges, it could cause a stroke, another heart attack, or even kill him.

The doctors have put him on a very strong blood thinner to try to dissolve the clot slowly, but he's having serious side effects from the blood thinner. He now bruises whenever he gets bumped and has had several serious, prolonged nosebleeds.

Please add him to your prayer lists.

Thank you.

Lily Allen has been one of my favorite singers for a long time now. I was one of her first 50 friends on MySpace, if that tells you anything. I deleted my MySpace account a long time ago, but I still love Lily's music.

Here's a GREAT recording of her covering Blondie's "Heart of Glass." This was recorded at the South By Southwest (SXSW) conference last month.

On March 23rd, evangelist Rick Ousley was "suspended from his evangelistic ministry" after he admitted to having a lengthy extramarital affair.

Ousley had served as the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, for several years. The current pastor at Brook Hills, David Platt, knew what would be on his congregation's minds the next Sunday.

Dr. Platt's sermon from that day, titled "How To Respond to Moral Failure in the Church," has been a very hot topic here in Birmingham. An MP3 of the sermon is spreading like wildfire around here -- it's being emailed from friend to friend and congregation to congregation.

You can download an MP3 of the entire 68-minute sermon here (right-click & "Save As" to download).

You can also download the sermon notes here, and download a video of the sermon here.

Earlier this year, Community Christian Church unveiled series of videos which parody the "I'm a Mac...and I'm a PC" ads from Apple.

In these videos, the theme is "I'm a Christian...and I'm a Follower of Christ."

The ads were pretty controversial, to say the least. Some people thought they were brilliant and honest. Others thought they were insulting and dangerous.

You can see all four videos from the series here.

What do you think? Would you show these videos at your church?

We've all seen those ads...the ones that have a "quote" from God. Like this one:

Well, lifechurch.tv has an innovative little spin on them:

You can see the entire series of ads here (including one that says "Lifechurch.tv sucks").

What do you think of these?

The guys at xxxchurch.com have also done an interview with Crissy, the former-porn-star-turned-Christian.

You can download it here.

xxxchurch is apparently a ministry that reaches out to the porn industry. They set up booths at porn tradeshows and share the gospel with anyone willing to listen.

They also sell New Testaments that say, "Jesus Loves Porn Stars" on the cover. Wonder what my Bible Study group would think if I showed up with one of those. Heh.

Subject: Is All Sin Equal?
Security: Public
Tags:community group, sin

Our community group got into an interesting discussion the other night. The question was, "Is all sin equal?" For years, I've heard that all sin IS equal -- that lusting after a woman is as bad as having an actual affair with her, that speeding is as bad as murder, etc.

There are many Bible verses which seem to point in this direction. The usual ones I heard were:

James 2.10
"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it."

And also:

Matt. 5:27-28 27
"You have heard that it was said, ‘you shall not commit adultery; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

So, I never really questioned this idea. It seemed wrong to me as an ethical human ("SURELY telling a little white lie isn't as bad as being a serial killer!") but who am I to question God, right? I've heard numerous teachers and pastors discuss this topic, so I accepted it.

But then my wife started doing a Bible study series from Beth Moore. It's on the book of Daniel, and her Bible study group has REALLY gotten a lot out of it. They've been raving about it so much that I started going through some of the DVDs myself.

In one of the sections, Beth writes one small sentence which implies that she doesn't think all sin is equal. Many women in that Bible study pointed this out, and were pretty surprised by it.

So our community group has decided to dive into the scriptures to see what we can find on the subject.

All sin is an affront to God's holiness and character, and all who sin are guilty before Him. So in that sense, yes, all sin has the effect of creating a gulf between us and God that only a Savior could bridge. Also, the consequence of all sin (which is death) is the same. But there are many Bible verses which explicitly and implicitly describe varying degrees of sin.

Here are some verses I found which certainly seem to indicate that all sin is NOT equal:

Matt 23:14-15,32-33
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

Certain sins in the law are distinguished in a particular context as an abomination to God, implying that others are not as severe (e.g. Lev. 18:22; Duet 7:25, 23:18, Isa. 41:24) .

Proverbs 6:16-19 lists particular sins in such a way as to single them out because of their depraved nature, separating them from others.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is set apart as a more severe sin than blasphemy of the Son (Matt. 12:31)

And, finally, this verse seems to settle the issue:

John 19.10-11 NIV
Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"
Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

I guess a good analogy would be speeding. The consequences of all speeding is a ticket (just as the wages of all sin is death). But the ticket for doing 65mph in a 55 zone is less than doing 95 in a 30 zone (just as the punishment for some sins seems to be greater than the punishment for other sins).

So...that's what I've found. What do you think? I'd love to hear some different opinions on these verses.

I'm not a person who cries often. I just don't. But this morning, something had me in tears in my car as I drove to work.

It was an interview with "Crissy" -- a former porn star.

Just a few months ago, Crissy returned to the faith of her childhood and quit the porn business. Her journey, and her story of how she treated as a child,  just shattered my heart. As the father of a young girl, it tore me to pieces to think of my own daughter going through something like that.

You can follow Crissy's amazing journey on her MySpace page.

Crissy's interview was on the Drew Marshall program.

You can listen to Crissy's full interview here (it's a 15.2MB MP3).
